Welcome to the Second Grade Website!
We had a wonderful time with our Chinese New Year celebration on Thursday. Mrs. Wang (Ethan's mother) came in for the day and gave us a lesson on how to make dumplings. We enjoyed dumplings and rice balls for dessert. She also gave the students money envelopes with Chinese money for good luck for the New Year. She gave the students paper dragons to decorate their desks since it is the Year of the Dragon. We ended the day in a parade following the dragon to the cafeteria where we enjoyed more dumplings and treats. It was a wonderful way to start the Chinese New Year and to begin our unit on China next week! Thank you Mrs. Wang, from all of us!
Before we left on vacation, we were able to complete our Progressive Stories with the other schools involved. We used voicethread to read our stories online, and were able to include the students illustrations. Use the following link to view the story online. http://voicethread.com/share/2546483/ This was our first attempt using a voicethread, so you may need to turn up the volume to hear their voices clearly. They enjoyed this project, and look forward to trying it again soon!
We will be finishing up our Australia projects this week, and plan to have our presentations thisThursday, Jan. 26th at 2:00 in the cafeteria. Jan. 26 is also officially Australia Day, so the timing is perfect! We plan to show our presentations, and then have some Australian treats to end the day. We hope that you will be able to make it. An invitation was sent home last week.
Reminder- Parent conferences are this week. I look forward to meeting with you to discuss your child's progress.
In Science, we will be studying weather and weather patterns. We will begin to learn about signs in nature that help us to predict weather. We will be learning about cloud patterns and what they represent. We will also introduce weather folklore to help us to recognize signs in nature as the farmers long ago did before we had the weather channel! I wonder who will be more accurate...
In Math, we will be starting our new unit on addition and subtraction with regrouping, collecting and interpreting data, and multiplication.
We will continue to work on our cursive writing this week using shaving cream. The students are doing fantastic with this, and are very enthusiastic about learning cursive!
In Spelling we will be reviewing digraphs and clusters. Please visit the Spelling City link on the links page for extra practice.
We are looking forward to a great week!!
